About AFSP

It is estimated that nearly 1 million Americans attempt suicide and more than 32,000 die by suicide every year. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding suicide prevention research, education and awareness programs as well as programs to support survivors of suicide. For more information please visit www.afsp.org.

AFSP Marathon Team

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon in October 2012 will be the 3rd year AFSP has a charity team running! We are excited at your interest and look forward to running those miles with you! Please know that every ounce of dedication, fundraising and community exposure helps to create new opportunities to educate our community on the taboo subject of suicide. As always, we run/walk to raise awareness and support.

What you get as an AFSP Marathon Team member:

As a marathon team member, all AFSP runners will receive update email newsletters of training goals and latest news as we gear up toward October 2012. Additionally, you will receive a team t-shirt, group dinner the night before the marathon and team memorabilia. More details to come!

Go to www.chicagomarathon.com
  • The marathon registration fee is $150 for every runner ($175 for international contestants)
  • On the Participant Information page when registering, under the box titled: “Running for a Charitable Cause?” go to the second drop down menu under the section that says “I have already contacted an affiliated charity and am raising money for” and select “American Foundation for Suicide Prevention”
  • AFSP volunteers do not need to register on the marathon site
  • NOTE: You will need your confirmation number when you register for the AFSP team

Step 2

Register as an AFSP team member

Go to the Out of the Darkness site and register
  • This link lets you register for the Chicago Out of the Darkness walk in order to have your own donation page with credit card support plus the ability to receive a gift from AFSP depending on your fundraising level. You don’t need to join the walk on September 24th, but are welcome to do so.
  • The AFSP team registration cost is $50 for every runner
  • Volunteers are also needed. Registered volunteers will receive a commemorative shirt and be invited to all events
  • Each AFSP Marathon Team member commits to fundraising a minimum of $500
  • Create your own profile with your information, which you will use for the fundraising goal

Step 3

Get Ready

CARA logo
AFSP is partnering with Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) for this event with a discounted training program fee. If you wish to be a part of the CARA training program fill out the form and return it directly to CARA. For more information on CARA visit www.cararuns.org.

If you wish to train on your own, we encourage you to consult with your doctor and prepare by getting proper shoes. Additionally, see what other local running clubs are available as we see running groups as encouragement and accountability while training! Also, you may find Hal Higdon's marathon training plans helpful.

Step 4

Fundraise and Stay Involved

  • Register for the various email lists in the upper left corner of this page.
  • We will be having events to help you raise money but start now and keep after people.
